Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening condition that is often misdiagnosed as cellulitis, which delays important treatment. To describe the diagnosis and management of children with NF, researchers at a single hospital in Turkey reviewed the records of 63 children hospitalized with soft-tissue infection from 1999 to 2006. Of the 13 children with NF, mean age was 35 months, 46% were male, and none was immunocompromised.
Predisposing factors included varicella lesions, intramuscular injections, penetrating trauma, omphalitis, dental abscess, and toxic shock.
