Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is a highly effective immunosuppressant that is used to prevent organ rejection after transplantation and to treat autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as lupus (particularly lupus nephritis) and erythema multiforme. However, when used during pregnancy, MMF can lead to congenital anomalies.
In a recent clinical report, researchers described a woman who took MMF for erythema multiforme for only 4 days during the seventh week of pregnancy and delivered a baby with microtia and external auditory atresia.
