Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is an allergic disorder in infants and children that is triggered by the ingestion of certain food proteins and leads to vomiting, diarrhea, and even metabolic acidosis and shock. Cow’s milk and soy are thought to be the most common triggers, but many foods have been implicated, including rice, which most pediatricians consider hypoallergenic. To examine characteristics of children with rice-induced FPIES, researchers from a single hospital in Australia retrospectively compared medical record data from 14 children (age range, 3–6 months) who were treated for rice FPIES and 17 children (age range, 2–14 months) who were treated for cow’s milk or soy FPIES.
