The influenza season is not yet in full swing, but a limited number of surveillance influenza isolates have been collected as of December 19, 2008. Of the 50 influenza A (H1N1) isolates, 49 (98%) were resistant to oseltamivir (Tamiflu), but all were sensitive to zanamivir (Relenza) and to adamantanes (rimantadine and amantadine). All H3N2 isolates and influenza B isolates were sensitive to both oseltamivir and zanamivir, but were resistant to adamantanes.
Treatment and prophylactic regimens are complicated because we do not have data this early in the season about the proportion of isolates that are likely to be H1N1. CDC has issued interim recommendations for the use of antiviral medications; their advice is to use either oseltamivir or zan…
