Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with grass allergen extract has been shown to be an effective treatment for rhinitis in adults (N Engl J Med 2008; 358:2259). Two industry-sponsored, multicenter, randomized trials from Europe confirm that SLIT is effective in children also.
The trials included a total of 519 children (age range, 5–17 years) with grass pollen–related allergic rhinoconjunctivitis who received once-daily SLIT or placebo tablets; treatment was begun several months before and continued throughout the grass pollen season. In both trials, children who received SLIT had significantly lower (24%–40%) median rhinoconjunctivitis symptom scores than did children who received placebo.
