The cause of stuttering is unknown, and whether delayed language development and shy temperament are risk factors for or results of stuttering also is uncertain. Researchers prospectively analyzed the incidence and characteristics of stuttering onset before age 3 years in 1619 children in Australia whose parents completed a questionnaire on their child’s second birthday, regarding early language development, temperament, demographics, and family history of language problems or stuttering. After completing the questionnaire, parents were asked to call the research team if they noticed stuttering behavior in their child. Stuttering was confirmed with home visits and evaluation by speech pathologists.
