According to a 2006 national survey, nearly 11% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity (not having access to enough food for an active, healthy life because of a lack of resources) during the past year. A higher proportion of households with children than households without children were affected (15.6% vs. 8.5%). To determine how food insecurity affects eating behaviors that might predispose youth to obesity, investigators analyzed data from 4746 students from 31 middle and high schools in Minneapolis–St. Paul, Minnesota, who participated in the 1998–1999 Project EAT (Eating Among Teens) study.
