In June 2009, the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) assembled 20 scientists to review the carcinogenicity of types of radiation previously classified as “carcinogenic to humans.” In addition to reaffirming the carcinogenicity of ionizing and solar radiation, the working group raised the classification of ultraviolet (UV)-emitting tanning devices to “carcinogenic to humans.”
This classification is based on meta-analysis results indicating that use of tanning devices before age 30 increases the risk for cutaneous melanoma by 75%.
