In 2006, the FDA approved Gardasil — a quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine — for use in girls and young women (age range, 9–26 years). The vaccine provides excellent protection against four HPV strains (6, 11, 16, and 18) that are responsible for about 90% of genital warts (types 6 and 11) and for 70% of cervical cancers (types 16 and 18) in women. Now, an FDA advisory committee recommends approval of Gardasil for boys and young men to prevent genital warts and approval of a new HPV vaccine (Cervarix) for girls and women.
The recommendation to broaden approval of Gardasil for boys and young men (age range, 9–26 years) to prevent genital warts is based on safety and efficacy data in about 5400 boys and young men from 23 countries.…
