About 20% of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have coexisting tics, but the association between stimulant medications and tics in children with ADHD remains controversial. Clinicians often ask about the safety of ADHD medications in patients with tics. Therefore, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of data from nine randomized, placebo-controlled trials that involved 477 children (age range, 5–17 years).
Methylphenidate, α2 agonists (guanfacine and clonidine), atomoxetine, and desipramine improved ADHD behaviors in children and youths with coexisting tics.
