Data are inconsistent regarding the usefulness of waist circumference (WC) measurements for screening high-risk children for metabolic disease. In the Fels Longitudinal Study, participants underwent physical exams and lipid profiles during childhood (between ages 6 and 20 years) and adulthood (between ages 25 and 55). Investigators used these data to examine predictive probabilities of body-mass index (BMI), WC, and family history of type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease in 161 white children (mean age, 14.5 years) with complete childhood data who could be classified according to metabolic syndrome status in adulthood.
