As controversy continues about use of noninvasive diagnostic tests (e.g., electrocardiography) for preparticipation cardiovascular screening in young athletes (JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Dec 19 2007 and JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Nov 4 2009), many experts advocate that a careful history and physical examination is the most practical screening approach. The Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (Preparticipation Physical Evaluation, 3rd ed. [Minneapolis, MN: McGraw-Hill, 2005]) is endorsed by multiple medical organizations.
