Postpartum depression affects 6% to 13% of mothers and is underrecognized, may become persistent, and adversely affects the whole family. To evaluate the psychological effect on mothers of having a controlling or threatening partner, investigators used data from two population surveys that were conducted about 2 years apart in the same cohort of women in Alaska.
Researchers invited 1340 women who completed the 2004 survey for the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (at an average of 3.6 months after delivery) to participate in the Alaska Childhood Understanding Behavior Survey (at an average of 28.5 months after delivery); 444 mothers completed both surveys.
