In April 2009, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) began active surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) and hospital mortality. These authors retrospectively analyzed surveillance data for 63,479 cases of ILI reported from April 28 to July 31, 2009; 17,239 patients underwent polymerase chain reaction testing, and 6945 had laboratory-confirmed influenza A (H1N1) virus infection.
Overall, cohorts from birth to age 29 years had higher incidences of ILI (range, 192–325 per 100,000 individuals) and confirmed influenza A (H1N1) virus (26–49/100,000) than older cohorts.
