Two more studies add to our understanding of the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus in children. Investigators at a pediatric hospital in Toronto compared risk factors and outcomes for 58 hospitalized children with 2009 H1N1 virus and 200 children who were hospitalized with seasonal influenza during the past 5 years. Children with H1N1 virus were significantly older than those with seasonal influenza (mean age, 6.4 vs. 3.3 years) and were significantly more likely to have asthma (22% vs. 6%). Children with HINI virus had a nonsignificant trend towards longer length of stay in the intensive care unit than children with seasonal flu.
