Since implementation of the Title IX Equal Opportunity in Education Act in 1972, girls' participation in high-school sports has increased 940%; currently more than 3 million girls participate in the U.S. The most popular high-school girls' sports are basketball, track, volleyball, softball, and soccer. In the 1988 National Health Interview Survey, the self-reported injury incidence among girls was about one half the incidence among boys. The author of this review examined injury rates in female athletes using data from research studies and three large high-school injury datasets (1995–2006).
