In 2006, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended standardized developmental screening at the 9, 18, and 30 month well-child visits (JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Nov 1 2006). The goal was accurate, early detection of developmental delay and referral for comprehensive assessment and an early intervention program.
To study the feasibility and effectiveness of the new policy, the AAP sponsored a 9-month practice-based study in 17 diverse pediatric practices. Designated practice members participated in a 1-day workshop focused on the screening recommendations, screening instruments, and approaches to practice changes to incorporate routine screening.
