Investigators examined the association between participation in three household routines — family meals at least 5 nights per week, ≥10.5 hours of sleep on weeknights, and ≤2 hours per day of screen time on weekdays — and obesity (body-mass index, ≥95th percentile) in a nationally representative sample of about 8500 4-year-old children who were assessed in 2005.
Eighteen percent of children were obese. The prevalence of obesity varied significantly with the number of household routines reported by parents: 14.3% among children exposed to all three routines, 15.8% among those involved with two routines, 20.9% among those involved with one routine, and 24.5% among those who did not participate in any routines.
