Researchers analyzed data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System to identify patterns in household cleaning product–related injuries among children who presented to U.S. emergency departments from 1990 through 2006.
During the study period, an estimated 267,269 children aged ≤5 years were treated for household cleaning product injuries. The number of annual cases decreased 46% during the study period, from 22,141 cases in 1990 to 11,964 in 2006; the rate of injuries per 10,000 U.S. population ≤5 years decreased 50%. Children aged 1 to 3 years were involved in 72% of cases, but the number of injuries in children aged ≤3 years decreased significantly over time.
