Stuttering is a type of dysfluency characterized by repetitions, prolongations, and fragmentation of sounds. Early onset (between ages 3 and 4 years) is usually maturational and subsides by age 5 years. The prevalence of stuttering in school-age children is 1%. Among children who still stutter at age 8 years (developmental stuttering), 85% had started by age 3.5 years. Researchers in London aimed to identify predictors of the persistence or recovery of stuttering in adolescence.
