In efforts to diagnose (or rule out) gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), multichannel intraluminal impedance (MII) and the standard pH-probe test can be used to determine whether a patient's symptoms are related to reflux. The pH probe detects only acid reflux, whereas MII uses electrodes on an esophageal catheter and can measure both acid and nonacid reflux. Does the addition of MII to standard pH testing change management decisions? To find out, researchers at a tertiary care center in Boston performed MII with pH-probe studies (pH-MII) in 50 children (mean age, 7.5 years) with gastrointestinal symptoms (59%), respiratory symptoms (4%), or both (37%). Adult norms were used to analyze MII data.
