Treatment Response to Etanercept in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

One third of patients had good responses, and one third had poor responses. Younger age was associated with good response, and female sex and systemic disease were associated with poor response.

Etanercept is a tumor necrosis factor α antagonist that is approved for treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Although highly effective in some patients, etanercept's therapeutic success in patients with JIA is variable. In an industry-sponsored study, investigators examined factors associated with treatment response in an ongoing observational study of Dutch JIA patients. All 262 patients (71% female; mean age, 12 years) who started etanercept in 1999–2009 were followed for at least 15 months and grouped on the basis of treatment response.
