I encourage all primary care pediatric clinicians to read the recent commentary written by two general pediatricians in Pediatrics on pain recognition and management in the pediatric office setting. The authors begin by stating: “A mere few decades ago, neonatal surgery was performed without anesthesia, postoperative pain management was typically an after-thought, and many significant procedures were conducted without local anesthesia or sedation.”
