Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is relatively common in parents following a traumatic injury in their child, and the parent's mental health could negatively affect the child's recovery. Previous studies have been limited to only 6 months of follow-up after the traumatic event. This prospective study used structured interviews to assess 99 parent-adolescent dyads (age range, 12–18 years) for 12 months after the adolescent's traumatic injury (requiring admission to a level I trauma center). All adolescents were oriented to location and date with an adolescent Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15.
