Few studies have investigated the co-occurrence of migraine (based on the International Classification of Headache disorders) and epilepsy in children. Researchers examined this comorbidity in a cross-sectional study of 400 children (age range, 3–17 years) with epilepsy being treated at either a referral pediatric neurology clinic or epilepsy clinic at a Maryland hospital between January 2010 and March 2011.
The prevalence of migraine was 25% overall and 32% among adolescents (age range, 12–17 years). Mean age at onset was 7 years. Half the patients had migraines at least weekly.
