Obtaining a urine sample for diagnostic studies in newborns can be time-intensive and require uncomfortable and invasive procedures. In a prospective feasibility and safety study, investigators in Spain tested a fast and safe method for collecting midstream urine specimens in 80 consecutively admitted neonates (31 girls and 49 boys; age <30 days).
Two nursery staff (nurses or physicians) were required to perform the following urine collection technique:
1) Infants are breast-fed or formula fed, and 25 minutes later, their genitals are cleaned with warm water and soap and dried with sterile gauze. Before starting the stimulation technique, infants receive nonpharmacological analgesia (nonnutritive sucking or 2% sucrose syrup).
