In children younger than age 5 years, intussusception is usually idiopathic, and a pathologic lead point or other cause is rarely found. However, pediatric case reports and adult studies have linked intussusception to celiac disease. To determine whether the frequency of intussusception is greater in children with known celiac disease than in children in the general population, researchers retrospectively reviewed medical histories of 254 children with biopsy-proven celiac disease and more than 300,000 pediatric control patients (age range, 6 months to 18 years) seen at a large U.S. medical center between 2000 and 2010.
