Nearly 2 million children are being raised by gay and lesbian parents in the U.S. Extensive research demonstrates that children's well-being is affected more by their relationships with parents, their parents' sense of competence and security, and the presence of social and economic support for families than by the sexual orientation of their parents. Further, children and adolescents who grow up with gay or lesbian parents fare as well emotionally, socially, cognitively, and sexually as those who are raised by heterosexual parents.
To ensure that public policies help all parents build and maintain strong, stable, and healthy families that can meet the needs of children, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports the following:
