In this double-blind trial, investigators evaluated the role of the anticonvulsant gabapentin in reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes in postmenopausal women. Fifty-nine women who suffered an average of 7 or more hot flashes (with sweating) per day were randomized to receive gabapentin (300 mg 3 times daily) or placebo for 12 weeks. Participants used diaries to record hot-flash frequency and severity (on a 7-point scale); hot-flash composite scores were calculated by combining frequency data and severity scores.
At 12 weeks, mean hot-flash frequency was reduced by 45% in the gabapentin group and by 29% in the placebo group; the difference between groups was significant as early as week 1 and remained significant for every week …
