In two recent studies, researchers compared hysterectomy with two alternative treatments among women presenting with menorrhagia.
In one study, 63 U.S. women (age range, 30-50) who had been dissatisfied with oral medroxyprogesterone acetate for menorrhagia treatment were randomized to undergo hysterectomy or expanded medical treatment (hormonal or nonhormonal treatment, or both). The two groups were similar on baseline measures, except that significantly more medical-treatment patients reported pelvic or bladder pressure (84% vs. 55%). A majority in both groups reported pelvic pain and pressure and had fibroids on examination.
