To determine the effects of hormone therapy in menopausal breast cancer survivors, Swedish investigators randomized 378 such women (age, <70) to open-label HT or no HT. In the HT group, women who had undergone hysterectomy received continuous oral estradiol valerate (EV; 2 mg/day); those with uteri who were younger than 55 received cyclic EV for 3 weeks plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA; 10 mg/day) for the last 10 days, followed by 1 hormone-free week; and those with uteri who were 55 or older received EV for 12 weeks plus MPA (20 mg/day) for the last 2 weeks, followed by a hormone-free week.
