In this prospective study, funded by device manufacturers and federal agencies, researchers examined the safety of uterine artery embolization in women presenting with symptomatic fibroids from December 2000 through 2002 at 72 U.S. sites. In-hospital data were available for 3041 patients and 30-day outcome data for 2729. In almost two thirds of patients, menorrhagia was the primary symptom (for additional baseline characteristics of these women, see Obstet Gynecol 2005; 106:44).
Most patients received intravenous conscious sedation during the procedure and narcotic analgesia in the hospital afterward. The mean procedure time was 56 minutes. Embolization was considered a technical success in 96% of patients. Most patients spent only one night…
