The largest-ever U.S. national study of women’s health continues to provide research-based information that can help you make decisions to protect your health after menopause. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) began in 1993 and was completed in 2005, with follow-up planned through 2010. More than 161,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79 volunteered to participate for at least 5 years to help find ways to prevent women’s most common postmenopausal health problems: heart disease; cancers of the breast, colon, and rectum; and fractures.
