Midtrimester amniocentesis has long been reported to carry a procedure-related pregnancy loss rate of 1 in 200. However, that figure was derived during an era when ultrasound guidance was unavailable and experienced operators were uncommon. Using data from the First and Second Trimester Evaluation of Risk (FASTER) multicenter trial, investigators assessed the rate of spontaneous pregnancy loss in 35,003 unselected patients with viable singleton pregnancies who did (3096 women) or did not (31,907 women) undergo midtrimester amniocentesis. Perinatologists or general OB/GYNs at each center performed the procedure according to standard local clinical practice.
