Women with breast cancer are often advised to delay pregnancy for at least 2 years after treatment. To examine the pregnancy rate, management, and outcomes of women diagnosed with breast cancer, researchers used the Western Australia data linkage system to identify 2539 women (age range, 15–44) who were diagnosed with breast cancer from 1982 through 2000 and who had a subsequent pregnancy before 2004.
Overall, 123 women (5%) had at least one pregnancy after their breast cancer diagnosis (total pregnancies, 175); 66 of these women (54%) had a live birth, 42 (34%) had an elective abortion, and 15 (12%) had a spontaneous abortion.
