There’s good news about breast cancer: Deaths from this disease have been decreasing in the U.S. And the news gets even better. The reason that deaths have fallen is partially due to something you can do for yourself: get regular mammograms. Many U.S. women are following this advice. Results of a large study in 2000 showed that about 76 of every 100 women aged 40 or older had had a mammogram within the past 2 years. However, that number may be dropping. In 2005, only about 74 of every 100 women reported having a mammogram during the last 2 years. Although this decrease is small, it worries experts; hard-won gains in the battle against breast cancer may be lost if women don’t get mammograms.
