More U.S. women than ever are having screening mammograms, and death rates from breast cancer continue to decline (see Journal Watch Women’s Health Dec 27 2005). Nonetheless, almost one third of age-appropriate women are not regularly having mammograms. In this study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, investigators used data from the 2000 National Health Interview Survey to assess why women who reported no recent mammograms (nonscreeners) did not get screened.
