Many women would welcome effective alternative and complementary measures for hot flash relief. In a randomized study, investigators examined the efficacy of acupuncture for treating hot flashes in 103 menopausal and perimenopausal women (age range, 44–59) who had experienced at least five hot flashes daily and who were not using any other hot flash remedies. Participants received a 5-week course of twice-weekly medical acupuncture (needles inserted in 12 standard acupuncture points) or sham acupuncture (needles inserted in nonacupuncture points) provided by one licensed acupuncture practitioner.
