Although women’s enrollment in cardiovascular disease (CVD) trials has been increasing and new markers of CVD risk have been identified, risk algorithms for women have not changed substantially in decades. Researchers used follow-up data (median, 10 years) for 25,000 participants in the Women’s Health Study who were healthy and age 45 or older at baseline to develop new algorithms. In a random two-thirds sample of the cohort, the authors used 35 traditional and novel risk factors to develop a best-prediction model and a clinically simplified version called the Reynolds Risk Score (RRS). The validity of the models was tested in the remaining one third of the cohort.
