Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. With the advent of the quadrivalent vaccine against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18, a population estimate of the prevalence of HPV infection is especially timely. As part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003–2004, researchers interviewed more than 2000 women (age range, 14–59) about demographic characteristics and sexual behavior. The women provided self-collected vaginal swab specimens, which were assayed for the presence of HPV DNA.
Overall, 26.8% of the 1921 adequate specimens were positive for any type of HPV DNA. Prevalence of HPV infection was 24.5% among 14- to 19-year-olds, continued to increase from age 20 to 24, and gradually declined…
