Despite efforts to make emergency contraception (EC) readily available, many women do not take advantage of this option. Investigators assessed use patterns and perceived acceptability of levonorgestrel EC in approximately 2000 sexually active women (mean age, 20) who visited one of four San Francisco family planning clinics. Participants were randomized to receive EC through advance provision, pharmacy access, or clinic access (all free of charge) and completed follow-up questionnaires 6 months after enrollment. Slightly more than one third of the women had used EC during the 6 months before enrollment.
