Mild IVF — Better for the Patient and for Society

One-year cumulative pregnancy rates for mild vs. standard IVF were similar, and the proportion of multiple births was reduced with mild IVF.

Drawbacks associated with standard in vitro fertilization include multiple births, discomfort from long periods of stimulation with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, and high cost. Dutch investigators randomized 404 eligible women to receive standard IVF (defined as ovarian stimulation with GnRH agonist and transfer of 2 embryos) or mild IVF (defined as ovarian stimulation with GnRH antagonist during a shorter period and transfer of a single embryo).

The 1-year cumulative rates of pregnancy that resulted in live births were 43.3% with mild IVF and 44.7% with standard IVF. However, 13.1% of women who underwent standard IVF had multiple births compared with 0.5% of women undergoing mild IVF. The total costs of IVF treatment per co…
