Drawbacks associated with standard in vitro fertilization include multiple births, discomfort from long periods of stimulation with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, and high cost. Dutch investigators randomized 404 eligible women to receive standard IVF (defined as ovarian stimulation with GnRH agonist and transfer of 2 embryos) or mild IVF (defined as ovarian stimulation with GnRH antagonist during a shorter period and transfer of a single embryo).
