Surgery performed by gynecologic oncologists (GOs) improves outcomes in women with ovarian cancer. Following the initial surgery, chemotherapy usually is overseen by a GO or medical oncologist (MO). This National Cancer Institute–funded, observational study compared outcomes among ovarian cancer patients (age, >65) by the type of specialist providing chemotherapy.
By linking patient data from eight Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) sites with patient Medicare claims from 1991 to 2001, investigators paired 344 women who had received chemotherapy from a GO with 344 similar women who received chemotherapy from an MO.
