The CDC has revised its recommendations for treating gonococcal infections and associated conditions including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The prevalence of fluoroquinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae has increased in men who have sex with men and in heterosexual men in all U.S. geographic areas; thus, the CDC no longer recommends treating gonococcal infections with fluoroquinolones. Highlights of the revised recommendations are as follows:
Uncomplicated gonococcal infections of the cervix, urethra, and rectum regardless of sexual practices or travel history: Intramuscular ceftriaxone or oral cefixime plus treatment for chlamydia should be considered if chlamydial infection has not been ruled out. Alternatives are single-dose reg…
