Few studies have compared the accuracy of liquid-based cytology using computer assistance with that of manually read conventional cytology. Investigators prepared both a standard cytology slide and a liquid-based cytology slide (ThinPrep) from the same cervical specimens taken from more than 55,000 Australian women in 2004 and 2005. The two cytology specimens were examined independently: Conventional cytology was examined manually by an experienced cytologist, and liquid-based cytology was examined using ThinPrep Imager assistance (ThinPrep Imager identifies 22 fields most likely to contain abnormal cells; the fields are then examined by a cytologist).
