Gastric bypass surgery, which results in greater weight loss than vertical-banded gastroplasty, is becoming more widely used in the U.S. as a treatment for obesity. In a retrospective cohort study, researchers evaluated long-term mortality among 7925 patients (84% women) who had undergone gastric bypass surgery from 1984 through 2002; the control group — matched for age, sex, and BMI — consisted of 7925 severely obese individuals (84% women) who had not received surgical treatment. The National Death Index was used to determine the rate of death from any cause.
