Obese women are at increased risk for breast cancer but may be less likely than nonobese women to obtain screening mammograms. Researchers examined data from the prospective Southern Community Cohort Study to investigate the association between BMI and the likelihood of recent mammography.
More than 18,000 black women and 6000 white women visiting one of 48 community health centers in 12 southern states were interviewed. All women (age, >42) had no previous breast cancer diagnosis and had a BMI ≥18.5. Women reported whether they had ever had a mammogram and, if so, the date of their last mammogram. BMI calculations were based on self-reported heights and weights.
