The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) recently updated its recommendation regarding breast self-examination (BSE): The society’s position is that mammography remains the recommended screening method for breast cancer and that teaching women to perform regular BSE does not save lives. The American Cancer Society (ACS) also acknowledges the weakness of the evidence on monthly BSE’s efficacy. In a large, randomized, controlled trial conducted in China, international investigators showed that the breast cancer detection rate was the same in women taught BSE as in those not instructed but that more biopsies were performed and benign lesions detected in the BSE group (J Natl Cancer Inst 2002; 94:1445).
