In 1990, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) developed guidelines for weight gain during pregnancy, shown in Table 1.
Now, researchers have conducted a population-based study to evaluate the relation between gestational weight gain and pregnancy outcomes in women (age range, 18–35) with normal prepregnancy BMI. A total of 94,696 eligible women in Missouri were stratified into three groups: 16,852 who gained <25 pounds, 37,292 who gained 25–35 pounds (reference group), and 40,552 who gained >35 pounds.
