Quantifying the risk for invasive cervical cancer after treatment of precancerous lesions is important in optimizing follow-up. Investigators used Swedish cancer registry data from 1958 through 2002 to determine whether 132,000 women who were treated for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 (CIN 3) had a greater risk for invasive cervical or vaginal cancer than did women in the general population.
Overall, women with previous CIN 3 were more than twice as likely to develop invasive cervical cancer than were women in the general population (standardized incidence ratio, 2.3).
